Welcome to Group 1: Vinnie Brewer Gathings

Luviney (Vinnie) Brewer was the first child born to Robert and Emiline. A beautiful woman, she married Samuel Gathings. He worked for the Postal Service. According to The Voices of Pageland, the  people in town called him Uncle Sam because he was born on July 4th and also died on the same day. Sam and Vinnie had eleven children: Charlie, Mary Francis, John, Lemuel, Roosevelt, Robert, Emma, Spofford, Frank, Ruth and Pearline.

The Gathings family branch is remarkable because of the number of doctors and other professionals born just one generation out of slavery. Think about it. Slaves were prevented from reading and writing, but Vinnie produced sons who were professionals in the health field. Robert and Roosevelt were physicians; Spofford graduated from Northwestern School of Dentistry and became a dentist; John was a pharmacist. Amazing!

Vinnie was the first person buried in the Wesley Chapel Church cemetery.
