Welcome to Group 2: William Brewer

William Brewer was Robert and Emiline’s second child and first son. He was born in 1866. In the 1880 Census, He was fourteen years old and listed in the Robert Brewer household including Emiline (mother); siblings- Laviney, Joseph, Lugenia (Lula), Isaiah, Effie, Robert and Sarah. His occupation was farm laborer; he helped his father on the farm.

When former slaves refused to sit in the segregated balcony of white church, William readily helped his father build the Oro United Methodist Church. Like his father, he ultimately became a member of the Masons.

He married Mattie Knight Brewer, and gave at least of their children very interesting names: Brutus and Brainus. Transport yourself back into the 1800s. It was probably extremely unusual for African Americans to be so learned and informed about Roman and Greek History. The Brewers had a third son named William Fred Douglass Brewer.

In the 1900 Census, they listed Jabie Lawery as a servant. This was, however, Jabey L. Brewer, the nephew of William. Because of Emiline’s advanced age of 58 considered old at the time, some of the younger Brewer children lived with relatives.
